We know this news arrives a little late and may have already been overshadowed by the biggest event many of you watched recently, the Summer Game Fest 2026, which took place just a few days ago.

However, there are still several points worth discussing, especially since the long-awaited remake of Resident Evil Code: Veronica has finally become a reality. For those unfamiliar with the game, here’s a quick overview.

The Story

Set three months after the events of Resident Evil 2, the game follows siblings Claire Redfield and Chris Redfield. Claire finds herself trapped on a zombie-infested prison island, while Chris embarks on a dangerous mission to rescue her.

The Lore

The game introduces the t-Veronica Virus and marks the dramatic return of the series’ iconic villain, Albert Wesker. Its story also lays important groundwork for the events that later unfold in Resident Evil 5.

The Gameplay

Like other classic Resident Evil titles, Code: Veronica features traditional survival horror mechanics, including tank controls, limited ammunition, resource management, and dynamic camera angles.

Modern Remake

Capcom has officially announced a full remake titled Resident Evil: Veronica. Built using the RE Engine, the game is currently scheduled for release in 2027.

For those who have never played the original game, now is a great time to experience it. PC players can still enjoy the title through emulation, whether by playing the PlayStation 2 version or the original Sega Dreamcast release. Interestingly, Resident Evil Code: Veronica was originally developed for the Sega Dreamcast. Since it was released during the final years of Sega’s console business, Capcom later ported the game to PlayStation 2 under the title Resident Evil Code: Veronica X.

What Are the Differences Between the Dreamcast and PS2 Versions?

Resident Evil Code: Veronica was originally released for the Sega Dreamcast in 2000. A year later, Capcom launched Code: Veronica X, which is generally considered the definitive and expanded version of the game.

The updated release introduced approximately ten minutes of additional story-focused cutscenes, visual improvements, and several gameplay adjustments.

Key Differences

Additional Cutscenes

Code: Veronica X includes around ten minutes of new or altered cutscenes centered on Albert Wesker. These scenes feature his first encounter with Claire, his confrontation with Alexia Ashford, and the legendary final showdown against Chris Redfield.

Steve Burnside’s New Hairstyle

In the original Dreamcast release, Steve Burnside sported a bowl-cut hairstyle that closely resembled 1990s-era Leonardo DiCaprio. In Code: Veronica X, his appearance was redesigned to look less like DiCaprio and to better distinguish him from Leon Kennedy.

Gameplay Improvements

The PS2 version introduced several refinements, including improved lighting effects, updated inventory icons, balancing adjustments, and slightly increased ammunition availability in certain areas.

Why These Changes Matter

The additional Wesker scenes were created to better connect the game’s storyline with Wesker’s Report, a promotional DVD that explained how Albert Wesker survived the events of the original Resident Evil. Because of these additions, Code: Veronica X is widely regarded as the canonical version of the story.

With that in mind, we’re excited to see Capcom continue remaking classic Resident Evil titles. Resident Evil Code: Veronica serves as an important bridge between the events of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 while also setting the stage for future entries in the franchise.
